Echoes from the Past was an exhibition of works in photomedia by MultiFocus, a group of Canberra based photographers and artists of diverse cultural backgrounds. For each of the artists, photography was a creative expression of communication that has enabled them to communicate with their chosen place of residence and the community with which they now share their lives. In this exhibition, each artist examines her or his relationship with the past, whether in their country of origin, their experience of migration, or of living in Australia. A core group of photographers and artists using photography as a media on non-traditional surfaces such as water colour paper, cloth etc. include Marie Lund, Payal Sehgal Mahajan, Basia Meder, Roswitha Giersch, Marianne Pietersen and Tamara Makeev. Community photographers, through the multicultural community networks in Canberra, have been invited and assisted by the core group to bring their perceptions into the show. |
